Jacked-Up (and kickin…)

WOO-HAH – it’s Friday! Welcome to a little later edition of "kickin’

This would be the 1st "school’s back in" edition of Friday meaning that it’s just me at the hizz-ouse this morning. Quiet… But, as usual, my mind is all over the place!

  • I am "jacked!" this morning about a lot of things but probably more than anything is the fact that i feel as if we are finally playing "OFFENSE". Let me explain…

    When our church began growing quickly we were faced with issues that we had never faced before (because we had never experienced this kind of growth). As a result, we seemed to always be reacting to stuff that was happening (always playing defense), but now…

    With the new "Secrets" series that begins next weekend (Sept. 9th) and especially with "LumbertonSecrets.com" I feel as if we are actually playing offense – God is setting the tone, we’re dealing with things that people are struggling with and lives are gonna be affected in a positive way. I will do all I can to not be distracted by "side issues" to the point of taking my eyes off the ball!

    I BELIEVE THAT MANY, MANY PEOPLE WILL GET FREE OVER THE NEXT 6 WEEKS!

  • Speaking of the website, have you read the heartbreaking confessions that have been posted on the site? I am more convinced than ever that we have done the right thing by talking about stuff that most churches won’t because they’re afraid they might offend somebody who already knows JESUS! I hope that this series opens our eyes to the shame that so many deal with on a daily basis – I pray that our hearts will go out to them and that we will do all we can to help others find the forgiveness that only comes from Christ.
  • This morning, pray that the "LumbertonSecrets.com" signs will be available to plaster around the city – i want people to "hit" this thing like crazy this weekend!

Well, "LumbertonSecrets.com" is up and running and we’ve had our 1st few comments on them – they have been absolutely heartbreaking…

I have been reminded this morning of why we’re doing this – and how heard the next 6 weeks are going to be! It is absolute torture to read the testimony of people who are struggling with secret sin – it’s the fact that it’s secret that makes it SO DANGEROUS – because there is no one who knows about the "secret" facet of their lives they are held captive to their secrets…

Many people can’t stand what it is that they do in private – these are the people who will post to "LumbertonSecrets.com" – their post IS a cry for help!

Today’s theme word is: Accountability (everybody say it with me: accountability – that’s good :)). This might be the most important word in the life of a Christ-follower – WE ALL NEED SOMEONE WHO HAS THE PERMISSION TO ASK US THE TOUGH QUESTIONS! And when they ask, we’ve gotta love God (and that person) enough to tell them the truth, no matter how painful it is! That way, next time you start to sin in secret, you’ll think to yourself, "you know, (insert name here) is going to ask me about this – is it really worth it?"

Listen, I cannot stand to see you or anybody else living in bondage – living beneath the level that God has designed them to live! Your secret life is so dangerous – let us all, beginning today, begin to strip away the stuff that allows us to hide our sin – let’s be so transparent with our lives that there is NO WAY that we could ever "fall-into" the place that will cause us to fail morally, ethically or spiritually.

The Sound

I told you yesterday that I was speaking at the Baptist Student Union house at UNCP last night – I don’t know how many students were there but I have NEVER seen a larger group in the times that I’ve been – the room was PACKED!

When Amy (Amy is in charge of scheduling their weekly speakers) contacted me she told me that last nights focus was Surrender (which I loved). As time drew closer and the Lord led me to the passages that we would discuss I wasn’t really aware of how heavy a night this might be.

The Scripture that I spoke from was HARD – normally, when I’m with that group we laugh a lot (I love college students!) even though I try to challenge the mess out of them! But last night was different…

I challenged them not to live a life of dead religion – to quit going through the motions of worship and become SURRENDERED WORSHIPERS.

We talked about sin and the seriousness/consequences of the bad choices we make: "As long as we make excuses for our sin we won’t really see that sin AS sin." I challenged them that change doesn’t "just happen" (a heart not desiring change DOESN’T change) – i told you, it was HEAVY in there.

I was wondering if I was getting through , "was this just a little heavy – it is like the 2nd meeting of the year" was the thought to myself as I was closing. But then, as I prayed over them and challenged them it happened…

I heard "the sound"… the sound of brokeness began to slowly make its way through the room – do you know the sound? It’s quiet – personal – a small "sniffle" that won’t go away… the sound of people doing business with almighty God.

I’m always amazed and mostly humbled when I hear "the sound" at the end of one of my messages – it’s reassuring (i was wondering if I had burnt the bridge that I’ve been trying so carefully to build to those students). Most of all it reminds me that we are nothing more than vessels which God works through. Will you add UNCP students to your prayer list – pray that God would place a passion for Himself in those students that cannot be deadened or satisfied by anything but HIM.

After a challenging 48 hours, www.lumbertonsecrets.com is finally UP!

What is LumbertonSecrets.com? It’s a supplemental site developed to support our new series, "Secrets" which will begin on September 9th .

We got behind in some of the developmental challenges of launching the site – there were some things that we were trying to see happen that were just unbelievably difficult to accomplish…

Anyway, the site is up and NOW the warfare will begin. Warfare? What is that about?

The Warfare is going to come in that, as we attack one of Satan’s greatest strongholds, and one that is normally not addressed by the church, we are sure to cause anger, frustration and spiritual warfare against us.

But do not be discouraged, my friends, because we are not limited to being on the "receieving end" of spiritual warfare – oh, no, we can wage it too! Remember…

10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:10-12)

We can do this! People need this message – Let’s help them find freedom! Look for the signs all over town in the next few days! Invite and Invite (and invite some more).

Tonite I have the opportunity to minister over at the BSU house on the campus of UNCP – man, I LOVE going to the college!

I don’t know if it’s a part of me missing my fast-fading youth…

…or the fact that I just love college students – full of potential, right on the brink of some of the BIGGEST decisions of their lives!

I’ve often said that if a college student radically meets JESUS it will totally change the way that they make the major decisions of their life.

I am also aware of the fact that the potential on that campus is absolutely limitless – thousands of young people in need of love, guidance and taste of a passionate relationship with JESUS CHRIST – a powerful combination!

If you’re a student at UNCP join us tonite at 6:30 for a couple of hours of challenging fellowship – who knows, you might even have a good time!

Man, I CAN’T BELIEVE i get to do this stuff!
