10 Years of Ministry – Part 1?

This weekend will mark my 10 year anniversary with Hyde Park. I have to say that it's hard to believe that I've been in the ministry for 10 years, let alone at the same church. It's been a journey to say the least; a good journey and a challenging journey. Here are a couple of interested things about my 10 years at hp:

  • Did you know that I actually served as a hyde park lay-person before I was on staff at hp? It's true – for one day I was a lay-member of hyde park church. I officially started at hyde park on Monday, August 1st, 1999 but unofficially began serving as Minister of Music and Outreach at hp on Sunday morning, July 31st. It was on that morning, 7/31/1999, that Keyna and I joined hp, which made me a lay-leader for exactly 1 day :)
  • If "we" had "our way", I would've never ended up here! 3 different people told me about the hyde park position; I had no interest in hyde park because I didn't want to go to another church that was anti-change and assumed that hp was that kind of church. On the church's side, Hubert Waddell (search committee chair) was told about me by a mutual friend, my former pastor. Hubert never called, later stating, "if he was worth anything I would already know about him". Once again, I must say :). If all had been left up to he and I then I would have never come to hyde park! Thank God that he doesn't always give us what we want!!
  • When I decided to undertake our 1st Passion play, "The Promise" in April of 2000 I lost half of the existing choir. Consequently, when the play was over the choir doubled in size in spite of the mass exodus. Again, that would be a :)
  • Favorite event through the years? That's a hard one… I've had a bunch but the one that I believe stands out the most is one that most of you know nothing about… A mission trip to Upstate New York with about 15 of you to a church plant that we were supporting. Not only did we have an amazing time ministering, but the fellowship on that trip was life-changing. Those of you who were part of that… that was a great, great time for me.
  • Most memorable worship experience? Two actually (in no particular order). The first would be April 8th, 2001 – Palm Sunday. We were in the middle of our 2nd of 3 years doing "The Promise" and we were worshiping on Sunday morning. The Spirit of Jesus was thick in the place when one of our former worship leaders, Chad Fallin, took the stage to sing the song, "Watch the Lamb". As Chad told us the story of Jesus' crucifixion in song I found myself and most of the church weeping at what we were hearing/seeing/experiencing. When Pastor got up to preach he began to read his text, Isaiah 53 and as he did he couldn't even get through the text for weeping. I experienced the presence of Jesus in the most tangible way that morning – His presence was manifest among us that day. Unbelievable. The second would have to be September 28th, 2003 – the week before we kicked off the "40 Days of Purpose" Church-wide campaign. That morning I was really busy prior to the service and had not been in the auditorium in the 15 mins prior to starting. When I walked onto the stage the whole place was filled – shoulder to shoulder and "the buzz" of the people was unlike anything I had EVER experienced in a church before… people anticipating worship and all that was about to happen. Within 2 months we were forced to add another worship experience to accomodate all that was happening in our midst.

Maybe you have some questions like this that you would like to ask – make them good ones and we'll answer/talk about them here this week as I reminisce about 10 powerful years.

Sunday Nite

Another amazing day at hyde park today – not only did we have great services (especially for a middle-of-the-summer weekend) but people's eternity was changed today as they crossed the line of faith from death to life in Jesus. Not only is that what it's all about, it always reminds me of what a great calling that we have as followers of Jesus – to point people to life in Jesus – YES!

  • As we undertook Week 3 of our series, "30 Days to Live" we tackled the subject of Legacy. I had the priviledge to bring God's Word to hyde park today. I don't know if I "brought the heat" but I sure used all of my energy! :)
  • We didn't just talk leaving a "Legacy", we talked leaving a Godly Legacy… there is a difference. Everybody on this earth leaves a legacy; the question is, will we leave a legacy that brings glory and honor to Jesus who is the purpose and meaning of life.
  • The life that you live IS the legacy that you live.
  • I asked the question, "how can normal people leave a Godly legacy that will impact their family for generations to come?". We answered the question through Proverbs Chapter 4.
  • How? We must 1. Speak the truth of God into our children's lives 2. Demonstrate Godly living to our kids. 3. Say it AGAIN. 4. Teach them to GUARD THEIR HEART.
  • My prayer is that we will all apply this teaching on a daily basis… "Lord, Jesus, please transform my life that my family will be impacted for you for all of eternity – I want my family 5 generations from now to love Jesus because this guy that they've never heard of loved and served and demonstrated Jesus to his family". Amen :)
  • Hyde Park Worship was off the chain this morning!!!! I listened to the 9am service from backstage, but experienced 10:30 from the front row…
  • I LOVE WORSHIPING WITH MY KIDS AND WIFE! We were all together calling out to God on the front row! You have to love that!
  • When they broke out the classic "Here I am to Worship with Call"… been a while since I've heard that… it was just connecting today.
  • I don't know about you but I REALLY needed that.
  • 3 people publicly trusted Jesus this morning – looking forward to seeing them be baptized on August 16th. Do you need to be baptized?!?
  • Great to see friends back in worship this morning who have obviously doing some summer traveling. :)
  • Did I mention that 10:30 worship was AMAZING!?! I was SO broken…
  • I began the message in both services by sharing some of our VBS opportunities to serve…
  • …in the 10:30 I shared that we needed a 5th grade teacher to which a hand raised stating that it was taken care of… I was like, "cool! Let's give God a praise!" to which we all clapped. Then I said, what about this next thing: before the next 3 minutes were up we had EVERY POSITION FILLED! Praise Jesus!
  • The iServe team was once again on point. So proud of them! They are definitely helping us to make Sunday the Best Day of the week and they FIRE ME UP!
  • This is gonna be a great week…
  • Next weekend we will close our series, "30 Days to Live"… you DO NOT wanna miss it!

I'm thankful to serve with you… I love you all!

Summer of Service 7/22/2009

Last nite we had the best time as we had the opportunity to touch over 300 people in about an hours time. If you've been around hyde park for long you know that it's our mission to "Love God, Love People and Serve our World" – if you've been wondering, that's what "Summer of Service" is all about, a practical way of living that our and putting it into action.

I'm wondering, how do you "Love God, Love People and Serve our World", those outside the church, outside the walls?

I hope you'll enjoy this video short sharing the fun that we had last night. (Facebook Readers: go here: http://www.wholeheartedlife.typepad.com  to see the embedded video)

Say What You Need to Say

We learn so much by example.

Many men have been taught (or shown by example) that we shouldn't get too expressive. Maybe you were told to "Keep your emotions to yourself" or that "Men don't cry". Maybe your dad didn't show you physical love or easily tell you his love for you and that example has made it hard for you to express your feelings.

In this past Sunday's message, Pastor Dennis, made a really great comment in speaking about "strength". He said, "the strongest Being in the whole wide world (God) has repeatedly said that He loves us". When you take into account all of the promises that God speaks to us about His plans and blessings for us, well… God loves you alot.

Being strong doesn't mean being silent – being strong normally means doing the thing that is the hardest – for many people the hardest thing that they could possibly do is express their heartfelt feelings, getting vulnerable and saying what needs to be said to a loved or appreciated one.

If I could sum up Pastor's message: if you and I are going to love completely, the way that God desires us to, we are to "Say it now, Show it now, Share it now and Forgive them now". With that in mind…

You have no idea how much I appreciate all of you… to allow me to be part of your life, to trust me to lead you spiritually, to speak the Words of life into your life… I am so not worthy. For those of you who show your love TO me – Thank You – I may not show my appreciation as freely as I should but I LOVE YOU. For those who serve with me (and sometimes for me): what would I do without you? I praise Jesus for your imput and participation into my life. For those who encourage me – DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW "ON TIME" YOU ALWAYS ARE? You do now… I need your encouragement more and more each day. Who knows how much time we all have… I'm gonna say what needs to be said…

I LOVE YOU ALL.

(this song was playing in my head the whole time I listened to Pastor preach Sunday… may we all be people who say what needs to be said while there is still time to say it)

Sunday Nite

Another great Sunday at hyde park this morning. As we took on Week 2 of our series, "30 Days to Live" we were once again to a life of passion by Pastor Dennis and I saw many demonstrations of that kind of passion demonstrated around our campus this morning! I am so proud of all who are serving extravagantly at hyde park…

  • Today was the 2nd week of our new schedule – I don't know… I kinda like it… I like getting out early. Definitely love the feel of the 10:30 service.
  • If you aren't plugged into a BFG, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!?! I challenge you: next week is your weekend – if you need help locating a class let me know.
  • I hope that you didn't miss today's message! I don't know ANYONE that doesn't need to hear the message of "30 Days to Live"… I continue to be challenged by the fact that the Psalmist asks God to teach him "to number his days" (Psalm 90:12) when we have been personally taught to number our years. No wonder so many people feel as if life just passes them by.
  • A couple of great points from the message:  "so often people say, 'when _______ happens then i'll'… if you found out that you had 30 days to live you would turn your 'whens' into 'nows'."
  • "So many of us have allowed circumstances, negativity and comments to steal our passion for living."
  • "if you found out you had 30 days to live you would want to be with the people that you care about most!"
  • "When we come to the end of our lives what we find out is that life and love are all about people, it's not about stuff, experiences or places – in the end it's all about God and people."
  • I continually was thinking about the John Mayer song, "Say What You Need to Say" – goes really well with this message.
  • Hyde Park Worship was today led by Justin McQueen. Justin is the worship leader for Crossover, (our middle school ministry) and this morning was his first Sunday morning worship leading experience. I thought he did GREAT! Very proud of the job that he did this morning.
  • And speaking of hyde park worship, today's music: Everlasting God (Lincoln Brewster), Holy is the Lord (Chris Tomlin), From the Inside Out (Hillsong).
  • Also included in both of our services this morning: we spoke via Skype to our mission team which is currently on the ground in Senegal, West Africa. It is SO amazing to be able to talk to people in countries around the world during the worship experiences. These are cool days that we live in… talking about bringing the message to life!
  • iServe was off the chain this morning! If you aren't serving WHAT are you doing?
  • I have been having a ball working my iServe post – i'm the "road waver". People are already getting used to driving by and seeing us wave at them :)
  • Made the call out for 20 workers for VBS – i SERIOUSLY HOPE THAT WE GOT OUR 20 WORKERS – yes, I WAS definitely talking to you! (that is if you haven't signed up).
  • My main man, Chris Crain and his wife Beth were at hyde park this morning. Do you know how cool it is to me to worship with life-long friends? It's almost surreal. Chris is a dj at a great christian station – Love that dude – you should listen to him out online.

I already can't wait for next weekend – we're gonna be looking at "Legacy". See ya tomorrow.
