“It” is kickin’

In the office this Friday morning doing some things to get ready for Sunday morning which by the way: I am SO ready for Sunday!

I've been off the stage for 2 weeks and I'm excited about a great time of worship with my hyde park family. Here's some things I'm thinking today:

  • The devastating earthquake in Haiti has broken all of our hearts. Watching people in such hopeless situations should remind us all of our spiritual hopelessness and need for a Savior. With this in mind we will be receiving an offering towards the Haiti Disaster Relief Fund (thankfully we have Southern Baptist relief teams on the ground). When you give please mark your envelope: HAITI
  • We have declared next Sunday, January 31st "Day of Prayer and Fasting". We are asking all of you to pray and fast for our Church, our Pastor Search Committee and the spiritual condition of our Nation. You can pick up a prayer-guide and instructions at Guest Services Sunday.
  • We will have a blood drive on February 7th. I believe in giving blood – if you are physically able GIVE.
  • Many, many prayers offered this week… I praise God for the opportunity to pray for so many. I also offer praise to Him for cleansing my heart and breaking it for others.

See ya Sunday Morning!

The R3 Principle

My main man Josh Shelley is our Guest Connection Coordinator at Hyde Park and heads up our iServe Ministry. Josh is a pretty visionary leader and is OFF THE CHAIN fired up about making Sunday the best day of people's week. Josh has come up with a way, the "R3 Principle" that was designed to help our iServe team understand how to make it that goal a reality. Ever Wonder What Makes Jesus Mad?

I remember when I was younger I used to think of God as an angry father who was looking down on me and taking notes on all the bad stuff that I did. I'm not really sure where all that came from – if I was guessing it would be from never feeling like I measured up in anything that I did.

In other words, I felt like God was mad more than He was happy (especially when it came to me).

So what DOES make Jesus mad? I believe that this scripture shines some light on the subject:

1 Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. 2And they watched Jesus, to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him3And he said to the man with the withered hand, "Come here." 4And he said to them,  "Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?" But they were silent. 5And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, "Stretch out your hand."He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6 The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.

Hardness of heart – being closed to the movement of God – quick to accusation. I don't wanna make Him mad – do you?

I Interrupt Today’s Post…

Instead of the post that I planned on posting today it has become quite obvious to me that today is a day that the Lord is calling me (and maybe "us") to call upon Him. I feel as though there is a Spirit of break through in our midst today… that if we would stop what we are doing and seriously call out to Him that He will answer. If you are willing to join me in prayer here is something to keep in mind as you pray – this is God's response to the reason unfruitful prayer happens:

Isaiah 58:2-10

2 For day after day they seek me out;
they seem eager to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that does what is right
and has not forsaken the commands of its God.
They ask me for just decisions
and seem eager for God to come near them.

3 'Why have we fasted,' they say,
'and you have not seen it?
       Why have we humbled ourselves,
       and you have not noticed?'
"Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please
       and exploit all your workers.

4 Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife,
and in striking each other with wicked fists.
You cannot fast as you do today
and expect your voice to be heard on high.

5 Is this the kind of fast I have chosen,
only a day for a man to humble himself?
Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed
and for lying on sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast,
a day acceptable to the LORD ?

6 "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
       to set the oppressed free
       and break every yoke?

7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe him,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
       and your healing will quickly appear;
       then your righteousness
[a] will go before you,
and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

 9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
"If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
with the pointing finger and malicious talk,

10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday.

I know the scripture is talking about fasting (and it's not too late to fast today… start now) but the principle is this: when you give the Lord a day, it's not about giving stuff up so you can manipulate Him to do what YOU want, rather, it's that you might fully turn your heart, soul and attention to Him that He might minister to the situation.

"if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14)

If you will check out my facebook page I believe that you will find prayer requests under my status update – PLEASE, those who pray, trust me – THIS is a day to pray.

A.D.D. Friday on a Tuesday…

So Keyna and I returned from our 20th anniversary trip from Hawaii today (Monday) and I just wanted to touch base with all of you…

  • This vacation was the most relaxing vacation I've ever had. Hawaii is truly a beautiful place – all week I could not help but think about how amazing heaven promises to be. If God did ALL THAT here on earth, can you imagine how great His house is gonna be? DANG!!!
  • I thought about so many of you this week thinking, "how much fun would such-and-such have to be here right now!"
  • I really did take a vacation. I didn't take my laptop (purposely). We did take Keyna's but never opened it the whole 7 days.
  • The weather was perfect. It never rained even though this is the rainy season.
  • When I would lay on the beach it sounded just like a Corona commercial – little waves lapping the shore with the palm trees swaying in the breeze.
  • It is so hard to believe that our Pastor is so close to the end of his pastorate with us. I am SO thankful for his imput into my life over the past 10 years.
  • I thought about our church a lot last week. I prayed a lot about our church. I sought God's face… I would literally just stand there in that lagoon with my eyes closed calling out to God – His presence was pretty strong out there (I wonder if anyone else could feel it?)
  • I had a great opportunity to share the Gospel in a seemingly impossible situation. I'll try to tell you more about it this week.
  • There is SO MUCH I want to say to all of you right now about what I believe the future holds. I am praying right now how soon I will begin to lay it all out.
  • Last weeks scripture reading (the whole book of Matthew and the whole book of Acts) was inspiring. I felt that seeing the whole thing in its entirety instead of broken up the way we normally read was inspiring. To see those types of things today.
  • Have I told you lately that I believe that God wants to rock this region by book of Acts proportions?
  • I am REALLY looking forward to leading you in worship this Sunday!

I'll close by repeating the following statement: My goal is not people living in a subculture organization called "church" – my prayer, "God, use me to inspire a generation to "BE" a life-changing, culture-building, other's driven, supernatural living organism called "the church". There is a difference.
