Sunday Nite (September 18)

I am so tired tonight because we have gone non-stop since 5am!! And though I feel exhausted in every sense of the word and my body literally aches from fatigue – I AM BLOWING UP ABOUT ALL THAT I EXPERIENCED TODAY!!!

This will be a short one but there is definitely more to come:

  • Week 2 of Intervention we looked at the fact that Jesus intervenes in the lives of those who feel like outsiders when it comes to the church.
  • Luke 19 – the story of Zaccheus.
  • Thank Jesus that He came to where I was, reached down and drew me to Himself. I am so thankful HE didn't give up on me. Therefore, we will not give up on those who seem as if they have gone too far!
  • I am also thankful to find out that I'm not the only one who always had to pee when I found the good hiding spot in hide and seek (you'll have to check out the podcast on that one – should be up by Tuesday).
  • We celebrated the Lord's Supper yesterday during the service. Always powerful when we reflect on Jesus sacrifice, ask forgiveness for our sins, and seek reconcilation and celebration through the sacrament of the Supper.
  • Worship was great yesterday. One of my favorite new songs would be "Only Our God" by Casey Darnell. I especially love the bridge, really great to sing in a large group as you can really sink your teeth into the bridge congregationally. And "Forever Reign" continues to be a fav of mine.
  • 2 of my favorite people, Alan and Karen Sealey made it to Vertical this morning! Long history with both of them – it seemed so natural for them to be with us today. They have both been praying from a far for Vertical. This morning was their first opp to be with us. They said it felt like, "home".
  • My favorite time of the service actually happens after the service when we have the opportunity to pray with people as they take next steps with our church. My heart fills with joy as I think about the times of prayer I shared this morning. I believe that God is TRULY at work through VC.
  • I AM SO THANKFUL FOR OUR TEAM!!! All of the people who serve at Vertical are the hands and feet of Jesus. THEY are the difference makers! MUCH LOVE to you all!!!!
  • Tonight we had VERGE, our new partners class. 29 people signed our church covenant and became Vertical partners. I AM SO PROUD OF YOU ALL! What a joy to spend that time and that meal with you all. I am looking forward to seeing the way that the Lord uses you to make a difference in your world through VC.

I'm so beat… ibuprofen and my bed are calling my name. Much love to you all – can you believe we get to do this?!? Pinch yourself, it's real, and we're just getting started!!!

Couple of Thoughts Going into the Weekend

I am really pumped about the weekend – last week was just supernatural. I have had conversations all week long with people about lives that are being changed by Jesus through Vertical Church.

With this thought in mind I just wanted to let you know that I am just as jacked about Week 2 of Intervention this weekend. I have such a heart for people who feel like they can't come to church. People who believe in God but also feel like they are outcasts are important to God – This weekend's message is dedicated to them. You can be the difference maker in their lives.

I'm thankful that Jesus is in the intervention business. I'm thankful that He intervened in my life.

Also, I'm looking forward to VERGE Partnership Class on Sunday evening. VERGE is the way that people join Vertical and I always look forward to meeting new people at VC. More info on Verge here.

Your Love is the Difference Maker

To all of our Vertical Partners and Attenders: EVERYTHING'S NOT OK!!! This week's Intervention Part 2 is for all the people you know who feel like THEY CAN'T come to church – they feel like outsiders and often times, outcasts. I want them in the house this Sunday, I want them to experience what God is doing in our midst. I want them to meet our team from the parking lot to the stage…

THEY'VE NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE THIS!!! Can we believe that together?!? I'm reminded of the people from last week's message who were amazed because of what the Lord did in the demon-possessed man – if they knew what Jesus was doing in you they would be amazed as well. I'm praying with you that God will allow you the blessing of having them with you at VC 10:30 am this Sunday.

V-Formation #1 (our core values) says, "If we love Him we will love Them." Loving people who aren’t part of the church isn’t just a good idea, it’s an imperative. We believe that God has placed us here to be light in our region. We can’t say that we love God if we don’t love the people that He loves.

“If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. (Luke 6:27-35)

I challenge you to press on through and pray for them right now wherever you are. Invite them again regardless of what they said last time. NEVER GIVE UP! Your love is the difference maker.

How You (YES, YOU) Can Amaze People

[18] As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. [19] And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” [20] And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled. (Mark 5:18-20 ESV)

What do you do everyday? Work? School? Housework? Whatever it is, do you ever have a hard time getting excited about it? Have you ever wished that your profession was more "spiritual"? Have you ever wished that you could have the life of a full-time follower of Jesus? You know, like Pastors do… they have it made, praying for people and reading the bible – spiritual stuff all the time (grin). Have you ever wished you could spend more time with Jesus?

If the answer is "yes", than you have much in common with the man in the above passage: JESUS moved mightily in his life and all he wanted to do was to experience everyday as a part of Jesus' "crew". This desire, though great, was not Jesus' call for this man at this time:

"Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you."

Though the guy must have been bummed that he couldn't be with Jesus all the time he did what Jesus told him to do – he told the people in his town what Jesus had done… the homeless dude, the one they all had cut off, given up on – clothed, in his right mind and changed by Jesus Christ.

And all the people were amazed.

Yesterday they were worried about their pigs. Yesterday they wanted Jesus to leave their region. But today… today they see the proof of what JESUS and only Jesus can do in a person's life.

This applies to us also. We can't all be professional Jesus followers but we can all be obedient to His call which applies to us all: Go home (and work, play, entertainment, etc) and tell them how much the Lord has done for you.

I dare you. Rejoice, be glad, be filled with gratitude that the Lord has given us this moment, this time, this position, this job, this contact with people we wouldn't have contact with if we worked inside a church office… rejoice in the great thing that HE has done. Those who come in contact with us today will be amazed at Him through us.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16 ESV)

How to JOIN Vertical

People often ask, "how does a person join Vertical Church?" If you've attended you know that there is no time during our service where we allow people to join. We believe joining a church is more than saying "I want to join" – we believe you should know exactly what it means. Truth is, I've always thought that it was odd that it was easier to join a church than it is to join a Sunday School class (and all my church background people say "amen!" because you know EXACTLY what that means). We feel that there should be more to joining a church than walking to the front, shaking the preachers hand and people voting whether to let you join their club (I have never seen anyone not get the vote – have you?) With this thought in mind there are 2 things that you should know about joining VC:

  1. People who join Vertical are not members, they are partners. The way we see it, "members" have rights but partners have a responsibility to the organization. We're not looking for members who will fill the seats on Sunday mornings – we're looking for partners who will join the team to help people who don't like church meet God.
  2. There is only one way that a person can become a Vertical partner. That process is called:

Verge (vʉrj) noun

  1. the edge, brink, or margin (of something): also used figuratively: the verge of the forest, on the verge of hysteria

Some of you are on the VERGE of a decision that will change your life forever! This meeting is a time for us to share who we are and what we're about and what partnership at Vertical looks like. You will have the opportunity to meet and talk with our staff as well as ask any questions you may have about Vertical Church.

Our next VERGE is this Sunday night, September 18 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at Village Station and IT'S GONNA BE AWESOME!!! Dinner will be provided (I'm always looking for a way to share a meal with new friends).

PLEASE NOTE: No children 5th grade and under will be able to attend.

Sign up here. (and don't forget, we will not have childcare – this is an adult only event.)
