3 Reasons I Can’t Wait for This Weekend!!!

I am SO EXCITED about this weekend for 3 Reasons and I think that you should be too!!!

REASON #1: “The Rest of Your Life” Begins!

Hear Richard Biggins inspiring story

I wonder how many of you want the REST of your life to be the BEST of your life? Sunday morning we begin our new series, “The Rest of Your Life – Life Lessons from the book of Job”. In this old testament book of the bible, believed by most to be the OLDEST book in the bible, we will see a story that filled heartbreak, reality, realization and hope – I wonder if that sounds kind of like your life as well? Maybe we can’t fix our past but we can form our future.

Each week will be intensified by true modern day stories that will REALLY hit home. I’m excited that this week’s story will be from a guy that I have had the privilege of watching God work in his life – especially when faced with one of the most possibly devastating challenges a 43 year old man can face: CANCER.

My friend captivating Richard Biggins story is going to rock your world and really make you think. I wonder who you know who 1) Needs to hear this INCREDIBLE story and 2) Needs spiritual encouragement?

Never forget: Relationships Make the Difference. It’s up to us to make sure the right people have the right experiences and hear the right messages.

REASON #2: Night of Worship is Sunday Night!

A few times per year we will do a special evening service where we bring both of our locations together for an evening of Vertical Worship and that evening is THIS Sunday night!! I love it when we have an extended time of worship through song to our Great and Mighty, Worthy God. Night of Worship is always a special time and this one will be no different. As a matter of fact, I dropped in on the band’s rehearsal last night and the way that they closed… DANG!!!

See you at 6:30 pm at our Lumberton Location. BTW… anyone and everyone is invited!!!

REASON #3: CANDY FEST 14 is Friday Night!

We have the privilege of partnering with the City of Lumberton to help them pull off the BIGGEST Trunk-or-Treat Celebration around. If you haven’t registered your vehicle hit up our KidzMin Sam Powers (or even comment below and he can contact you). Don’t forget, the best decorated trunk will win $100!!! #candyfest14

This is gonna be the best weekend EVER!!! Who are you bringing to Vertical?

Giving Food Away, Bringing Candy and Being Offended

Happy Friday morning everybody!!! I CAN-NOT-WAIT for this weekend – gonna be a great one with Vertical. Here’s a couple of things that you all should know on this beautiful Friday:

1. Fuzion Church / Second Harvest Mobile Food Pantry

Tomorrow morning (Saturday, Oct. 18) our soon to come church plant in Raeford, FuZion, will be hosting a Food Drop along with 2nd Harvest Food Bank at McLauchlin Elementary School (Raeford) from 10-12. If you are in need or know someone that is come and allow us to bless you this Saturday. If you are a Hoke County resident, all you need is a valid ID & something to carry your food home in. If you are If you are interested in serving with us for a couple of hours inbox Pastor Matt for more information. Also, Chris McGirt from the Ltown location is planning to take some people with him. You can hit Chris up HERE.

2. CANDY FEST Collection

We are asking every family to bring 1 large bag of individually wrapped candy to 1 of our Sunday services between now and Oct 31st. All candy will go to assist our partners at Lumberton Recreation and Candy Fest 2014 at Biggs Park Mall (which Vertical serves at).

If you would like more information you can contact our kidzMin Sam Powers HERE.

3. Altar Ego 3 this Sunday – My Right to be Offended

Has there ever been a time when someone did something that just downright offended you? Of course there was. Sometimes people say things out of brashness, not caring whether they offend or not. Sometimes, in expressing an opinion, a person unintentionally offends another. I unintentionally offended someone this week (of course, I asked forgiveness). Don’t we have a right to be offended when an injustice is committed against us? We’ll talk about that and more this Sunday. WARNING: THE OPINIONS EXPRESSED THIS SUNDAY MAY OFFEND YOU!

Lastly, this week on my timehop I was reminded that 3 years ago this week Vertical Church had our 1st public services on a Sunday afternoon at the Holiday Inn in Lumberton. Everything that we have seen has been so unbelievable. Hard to believe that we had outgrown that place within 3 services. Praise God for the day of small beginnings. I love you all… WOW… still cannot believe we get to do this together.

My Struggle with Feeling Inadequate

This past Sunday we began a new series titled, “Altar Ego”, based upon the book of the same name by Craig Groeschel. The whole premise of what we are talking about is that all of struggle with our EGO.

Ego: A person’s sense of self-esteem or self importance.

In other words, our ego is what we believe or think about ourselves.

Some of us think to HIGHLY of ourselves. That’s not good. (Romans 12:3). Others of us think too LOWLY of ourselves. As creations and children of our Great God, Who created us on purpose, that’s not good either (Jer 1:6-8).

There are many reasons we struggle with feeling insecure and inadequate. Whether it be because someone has spoken some negative thoughts into your life that has affected your self esteem our it be because you are guilty of comparing yourself to others – the feelings are real and they can be crippling.

In the message I shared my biggest insecurity that has crippled me in the area of feeling inadequate. Now, I’m not gonna rehash my whole message here **I hope that you will listen to the message – I believe it will be incredibly helpful because everyone I know has some sort of insecurity** but I have found myself to be incredibly insecure in many areas through the years. I try to deal with these insecurities because I know that it will affect my ability to lead this great church. But the one I keep coming back to is

The Inadequacy I feel as a Pastor.

The good news is it’s less about ME than I usually think. God truly has this – I just have to lean into Him, love love, wisdom, love and leadership. The pressure of leading Vertical is real and there have been many times that I felt I was in over my head. Here are some of the feelings I have (see if you can relate):

  • I don’t feel qualified to lead as I do… (I have been told as much)
  • I don’t feel smart enough to do what I do… (I’m not the smart kid that just gets good grades for showing up)
  • I see others who appear to be so much better than me at what I do… (I only see their highlight reels)
If I don’t watch out I will be bound by my feelings of inadequacy.

In the message I shared a very UNCOMFORTABLE story about the way that God affirmed me and my calling on the very week that I would talk to my church about this feeling of inadequacy. It’s just like God to step in right on time and say, “You belong to Me – I got you!” That’s how I felt that day.

Which brings us back to you? What are you most insecure about? Where do you feel most inadequate? Maybe you feel like…

  • “I’m not good enough to do what I’m supposed to be doing!” I had multiple convos with people after both services who had similar experiences to mine. High standing, high ranking, leader type people who weren’t “qualified” in the world’s eyes to do what they do. But they do it and they do it well. You don’t feel good enough? Cry out to Him for His power to do what He has placed you in position to do.
  • “I’m not smart enough to hang!” Call out to God, express your heart, spend time in the quiet with Him. Receive His wisdom. (Psalm 1:1-2)
  • “I just don’t know how to get everything done that I’m supposed to get done!” Stop what you’re doing, breathe deep, pray, and receive the strength that comes when you surrender what you are doing to the One Who has the strength to make it happen.

28 ”Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

You have everything you need to do what you need to do. Most likely you just need to lay it down before God, on His “Altar” and receive. God has given you more than you think.

Something You REALLY Need to Know About Sunday

It’s gonna get really REAL, REALLY quick this Sunday at Vertical.

My desire as I teach you the Bible and about Jesus is to be faithful to the original intent, while allowing God to search my soul for the things deep inside of me that apply to the teaching that I am bringing that day. What I am talking about Sunday is about as REAL as it gets as I share one of my truest struggles.

I bet some of you deal with it as well.

One of the things that I have seen through the years of pastoring people is that many wrestle with who they think that they are. Maybe something on this list sounds like you:

  • Insecurity.
  • Approval of others.
  • Control freaks.
  • Easily offended – commonly find offense in others.
  • Obsessing over what others have that you don’t.
This Sunday we are starting a series titled, “Altar Ego” that will deal with all of these subjects. I bet you AND someone you know struggle with some of these (so make sure you let them know).
Btw: If you had a friend baptized over the last 2 weeks make sure to make sure they are with you Sunday. Remember, they are YOUR responsibility. CAN’T WAIT!!!
