a riddle?

I sent some scripture to the worship team on Monday – in the form of a riddle – thought I would share it (and some interpretations) with you, so here it is:

2 Samuel 6:12-16; 20-23
12 "Now King David was told, "The LORD has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God." So David went down and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. 13 When those who were carrying the ark of the LORD had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. 14 David, wearing a linen ephod, dance before the LORD with all his might, 15 while he and the entire house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets.

16 As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she despised him in her heart…

20 When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, "How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, disrobing in the sight of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!"

21 David said to Michal, "It was before the LORD, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the LORD’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the LORD. 22 I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor."

23 And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death."

This is really serious, but treat it like a riddle – can you figure out why I am sending this to you?

What about the rest of you – your comments?

  1. Rhonda says:

Although he was ridiculed and even “despised” David honored, praised, and gave thanks to God with excitement and vigor; we (as leaders) are also called to show this kind of obedience to Him even when it means others will not “get it” and think we are crazy! Is that close?

  2. bree says:

All that I can say that it means:
Worship truly from our heart and not worry about what others say as long as we are focused on Him and mean it FROM the bottom of our heart. Not as a show, but as an uplifting of praise to HIM.With the emphasis being on worship in spirit and in “TRUTH!” Even if we have to act da fool like David said he was willing to do for the Lord.
    Simply put: “Let go…”
    Is that what you meant?

  3. mikep says:

Rhonda and Bree: both good shots! honestly, there’s not an “answer” but more of an interpretation. More to come on this…

  4. elizabeth says:

Are you trying to tell us that no matter how undignified it may seem to us that God will be honored if we worship and celebrate him completely?

  5. mike p says:

Elizabeth: …ummm – within reason (? – hear my uncertainty?) Once again – we worship in spirit and truth, which means we would never run contrary to scripture, right?
…and there really is no certain answer, it’s kind of a quiz with something to follow – seeing what you think of the scripture.
For me, the main thing is that David didn’t care what others thought and was willing to go against the grain to bring more glory to His King… matter of fact, he said that he would get even more undignified!
    Good answer.

  6. Charlie says:

    What up Bro. Mike
It’s sorta hard to follow where you’re going with this. I think I know the spiritual answer to the riddle, but you may have something else in mind.
    1. God highly values His people’s devotion in worship. It’s has to be one of our very highest priorities not only in our victories, but even our defeats. I have to admit and you will agree that it’s alot easier to praise and worship Him when everything’s going good. But how do we praise Him when we’re just having a terrible day? It’s hard man!!!!!!!!!
    2. Worshipping the Lord with our whole being is an appropriate response. I think as a worshiper, and ex-worship leader I tend to pick up on this alot. Mike we’ve got to put on our blind folds (if we need to) and not worry about our neighbor, or who’s looking and all that stuff, if we are to truly worship Him as you would put it, WHOLE HEARTEDLY.
    3. We have to be careful not to criticize different kinds and forms of worship. The Lord is really working with me on this one. I had to deal with this over 22 years ago when I joined the Meares Group. I was born and raised a Baptist all my life and was use to and comfortable with the way We Baptist worshipped, you know all those hyms and dox’s and things. The Meares on the other hand were Holiness and way far advanced than me in the spiritual realm. I thought at first after seeing the way they worshipped at times ( singing, shouting, dancing, crying, throwing hands up in the air) that this was way too out there man, and I did’nt want to be a part of it. God showed me later that there is all kinds of worship out there, and not to criticize any of it Please help me in praying about the CHRISTIAN RAPPERS and BEE BOPPERS. I can’t seem to break those chains yet.
Am I close?????? Did I win??????

  7. mike p says:

That’s a good answer Charlie.(and I don’t have “a winner” yet – not everyone has posted!) DANG!!! always wantin’ to win and stuff…

  8. bree says:

Pick me! Pick me! I wanna win!
    (hehe, just kiddin’)
    ((I’m really not…LOL))

  9. shelly says:

God will bless those who choose to put away thier own foolish pride and come to him childlike.
    Don’t judge – rejoice
Mike keep me & Noah strong in prayer!! Thanks

  10. mike p says:

Shelly: those are basically the words of Jesus – there is no other way to truly come to Him… (i love your line, “don’t judge – REJOICE!” the scripture says, “rejoice in the Lord, Always – and again I say, Rejoice!!”)
I am praying for you and Noah, not only for strength, but that God would show Himself strong on your behalf!! In Jesus’ Name!

  11. Laurie Ashley says:

Well, Mike…I see this scripture as a true victory dance–I mean–after a previously failed attempt to bring up the ark–he had accomplished it–and it was kind of like–in my eyes–bringing the blessing of the ark to the people–that it was a blessing to have it near him (as the ark was a type of Christ)–PLUS, it’s kind of like showing that the ark wasn’t such a burden as one might have thought with all the previously failed attempts to bring it–
Having fixed his previous errors–he was successful–having addressed his own issues of disobedience–he had known success–he wasn’t supposed to bring it in a cart–he was to have it carried on the shoulders of THOSE WHOSE BUSINESS IT WAS TO CARRY IT–
Might the bringing of the “Ark” be the job of worship leaders–to usher “the ark” into our presence–or perhaps-in a less theoretical or symbolic way–lead US to the ark???
    Just guessin….

  12. mike p says:

ooh, Laurie… deep stuff there – i LIKE that!

  13. Laurie Ashley says:

    i like that line, too….don’t judge…REJOICE!!!
