Made to Worship – Part 1

This week we’re talking about worship and what it means to the regular hyde park attendee who is trying learn to follow JESUS on a daily basis with more passion than they did yesterday.

For me, worship is an amazing (yet puzzling) concept; that we (unworthy, unholy) can come into the presence of our Holy, Righteous God for the purpose of fellowship, prayer, making requests, sharing our love and devotion in His presence. Why would He even bother with us? I don’t know about you, but I find myself failing, like, everyday. Thank God that…

"…God is love." (1 John 4:8). Even more amazing is the fact that, as Romans 5:8, says, "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." What does this mean for you and I? I believe it means that, because of His great love, we should do all we can to demonstrate our love back to Him. I believe in Public Displays of Affection (PDA) – I know that many don’t, I do, and therefore, because I practice it with humans, I believe that I am to practice it with God.

I think that we should all strive to have more PDA in our lives – with our spouses, children, friends, family – even with work associates (when appropriate, of course). Now I know that some are wondering where this is going – I am saying that we should all strive to show more PDA for JESUS.

Why is it that one of the hardest things for a Christian to learn to do is to publicly express their love to God? Why can a person go to a ballgame or a race and scream & shout yet come into church and be so dis-engaged? I’m convinced that a lot of it has to do with their tradition ("church is a place to be quiet and reverent!")and some of it has to do with embarrassment ("what would they think of me?").

We show excitement about that which we are excited about – We show passion to that which we have passion for – We express deep love and thankfulness for that which we have a deep love and thanks for.

Everyone worships differently - We should have our own "worship personality". Most people never think about this – they will work to grow in many areas but never think about growing as a worshiper. Let me say it again: If we want to we can GROW as a worshiper.

I will close today with 2 illustrations (Please find the time to watch these) – I will use video from 2 different churches. Here’s what I ask you to observe: watch the way that others worship the Lord, observe the different personalities. Notice how many are "tuned-in" to Him – they speak to Him in prayer as the service unfolds. Many are having "communion" with their King, they are intimate in His presence as He pours Himself out upon them… It’s obviously an awesome time.

Question: Are you willing to grow as a worshiper? Your own personal growth – stretching your comfort zone for Him?

    Mike,
The piece that strikes me here, is that when you’re talking about his majesty and why he’d even take time with us…the thing I often have trouble wrapping my brain around is that he actually DELIGHTS in me coming–he DESIRES for me to come–he WAITS FOR ME!! FOR ME!!! HE values and treasures the time with me. Why? How? Does he know me? See me? Get how wretched I really am? and yet–he seeks me….THAT is an amazing thing to me! How could a God so Holy and beautiful care if i come? and yet, he does….alot!
CREATIVE MINISTRIES TEAM: Loving the videos and stuff!! Super job!!

  2. mike p says:

Exactly, Laurie! “Waits? For Me? But why? Don’t you, like, have created beings that shower you with praise?” And of course the answer is yes, He was, is and is to come showered with the praise of His beings in heaven. Why God do you actually desire my worship? Truly a mystery…

  3. Adeana says:

Just write Adeana at the top of this post and send it to me personally ok, because this was meant for me. This is something that I struggle with and have been working on for a little while now. My PDA for Him. I WANT to but am scared for some reason so I hold back. I don’t want to hold back, I want to show Him how much I love Him and to be fully in His presence and when I am scared I am not there.
I am looking forward to the rest of this series Mike! Thanks for sharing the wonderful video of At the Cross!

  4. mike p says:

Thanks for your honesty, Adeana. The truth is, we could ALL write our name at the top because we should all continually grow as worshipers. On Wednesday’s post I will actually share “my 1st time” as a public worshipier. Thanks for reading!

You have inspired me Mike P. and I am gonna go blog about it…check it out. ( http://mydailywalk-bree.blogspot.com/ ) Too much to write here in your comment box. LOL! I LOVE THIS SERIES! GREAT move! Thank you JESUS CHRIST for the inspiration you instilled here in Mike. This is something we ALL need to hear about.

Was anyone actually able to watch the videos. I had to struggle the whole time to actually see how they were worshiping because I couldn’t stop worshiping myself. Can you imagine the power that must have been felt in those places when all of those people let go of themselves and focused on him? It gives me chills just thinking about it! Our services are great, but how much better could they be if everyone would just forget themselves and worship only him!?!?! What do you think the first step is in letting go?

  7. mike p says:

Wow, Bree – great response on your page ( http://mydailywalk-bree.blogspot.com/ ). I know that you’re a worshiper, and remember, we all have a different worship personality. I think the thing is to actually try to find that personality – we should always work on that.
Elizabeth – you asked the question: What do you think the first step is in letting go? I think that the 1st step in “letting go” is dialogue between yourself and God in which you express to Him your desire to be more free in your worship, asking for His leadership and guidance in this area. And if I may make at least 1 self-serving plug, check me out on Weds as I describe my “1st time”.
Love to you all and thanks for reading and participating!

  8. Janice says:

Mike, I have often given alot of thought to this and echo how most people feel here. Worship is exactly what we were created for, it is expected of us. How can anyone who hears the words to “The Revelation Song” not bow their hearts in worship and raise their hands to the Father, if you are truly worshipping in Spirit and in Truth. I am soulfully and spiritually moved to worship when I hear that song. In John 4: 23,24
“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” If we are truly worshipping, we are worshipping in spirit and in truth! Amen?

  9. mike p says:

Janice – AMEN. period. May NOW be “that” time.

  10. Cyndi says:

Mike, I always stand in awe at the depth you have obviously reached in true worship. I’m so glad you are doing this as I have always somehow felt as though “they”, people expected me to act a certain way in worship when I really wanted to just get lost in His love and just worship! It took some time for me, but at some point it was like my Heavenly Dad spoke to my heart and reminded me “why” I was in a “worship service”, and that the people in front of me were not the ones who died for me. He also remiinded me that I was in a place of leadership and my job was to “lead them into HIS presence”. I’m glad He did, because it didn’t feel so good then, but when I let go and just lost myself in His presence…true worship came!!!
Thanks for doing this, because you only get out of worship what you put into it! When you give up the praise, the glory comes down!!!
    I love you!!!

  11. mike p says:

Cyndi – you said that “people expected me to act a certain way in worship when I really wanted to just get lost in His love and just worship!” Isn’t that ironic – that was ALL that He wanted from you in that same moment. As I stated, I believe that Everyone has a unique worship personality and it’s up to us to develop it.
