There are good list and bad list. Some list you desire to be on and some you do everything possible to stay off of. On the following day Jesus made the critics list:
Now he (Jesus) was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled. But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons,” while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven. But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you…Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. (Luke 11:14-23 ESV)
Ever feel like you are on the critics list? I feel like I've been on it for years. I wear it as a badge of honor. Through that time I have always tried to remember Galatians 1:10, "For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ." I know Who I aim to please.
Maybe you have noticed as I have how some of the most "religious" people look for reasons to dispell the things God does because it doesn't pass their "what I think is right" test? Jesus experienced it too throughout His whole earthly ministry.
A lot of people think they have the spiritual gift of pointing out what is wrong with other churches or pastors, the spiritual gift of criticism which they disguise as discernment. True spiritual discernment is of the Lord. Most of these people know nothing of that spiritual discernment – they don't even recognize when God is at work. Jesus, the Son of God, said in the above passage about those accusing Him, "But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you…Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters."
These people did not have discernment. They were just critics. Of the 24 spiritual gifts found in the bible I have yet to find the gift of criticism.
I have noticed, however, that Galatians 5:19 says, "Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."
To the person(s) who likes to point out what's wrong with other churches/ministries: look at the list above – could your attitude be mistaken as fitting in this list? When I see your criticism of others the words strife, rivalries, dissension and division jump to my mind. I also think deep down it is somehow rooted in jealousy and envy. Looks like you made a list yourself – how does it feel?
There are many list that you can make in life. If you are serving Jesus with your life or ministry and the critics are hatin' on you – bless and love them, re-examine your heart and motive by the scriptures, then if all is well by God, keep doing what you're doing, in Jesus Name. After all, He was wrongly accused by ignorance as well.
